When is the last time you let loose at a fair? For me, it had been a LOOOOONG time. Like over 20 years.
Earlier this year I made a goal to book some new experiences for myself, and when Tourism Swift Current invited me to attend Frontier Days, I called up one of my best friends and we made plans to meet. As a bonus, the 3rd person of our trio would be home from the states that weekend, too. Perfect timing.
Southwest Saskatchewan has been getting crazy amounts of rain and as much as I was hoping for sun, that day was no different. We showed up in rain gear, tied up our hoods, and bought tickets with a decision to just have fun.
After a spin on the Ferris wheel, we somehow were feeling brave and went for the Zipper. With no lines, we didn’t have time for self doubt to creep in.
All I can say is I haven’t screeched and laughed that much in a very long time.

For 3 hours we laughed, spun, and hung upside down. We played whack-a-mole ( I won) and ate mini donuts, did the bumper cars and rode the pony merry-go-round, all in the pouring rain. The ride attendants got a kick out of us, as I am pretty sure we were the only adults out on the rides.
We did make sure to rest our tummies after every few rides by heading into the tradeshow to shop and watch some of the cultural performances.

Soaked to the bone, we checked into City Centre Motel and rested before the evening concert. The room had 2 queen beds and was spacious, clean, and budget friendly.. Just what we needed. Original Joe’s was just around the corner, so we made plans to meet the rest of our group for supper and drinks.

Then came Diamond Rio! ( Opened by Tyler Joe Miller)
Standing at the very top row of the grandstands at Kinetic Park, dancing and belting out Norma Jean Riley with the bright lights of the midway behind us is a memory that will stick with me. The rain had stopped and it was a perfect evening.

The 3 of us have been friends for over 20 years, but don’t get many opportunities to be together as a trio. We skipped the after party cabaret, with jokes about how we are getting old, but made plans to meet for the parade in the morning.
The weather was perfect the next day and Elmwood Park was a great spot to watch the Frontier Days Parade. I was tempted to stay in Swift Current and enjoy a sunny day at the midway, but I left with a smile on my face and some disbelief that I actually rode all those rides…. Without getting sick!

Thank you to Tourism Swift Current for having me out. Frontier Days is an annual event that spans a few days. Hopefully I get to come back to take in more of the festivities.
